Mount Chateau Hotel Postcard
Long before the construction of the Lake Lynn Dam formed Cheat Lake in 1926, the Mont Chateau Hotel stood proudly along the banks of the wild Cheat River. Opened in 1894 by Fred Dean, this landmark resort—loosely translating from French to “Mountain Castle”—served as a premier upscale summer escape for travelers across the East Coast. Visitors flocked here by horse-drawn carriage and early automobiles to enjoy fine dining, pristine mountain air, and boating excursions. In the early 1900s, legendary figures like future Nobel Peace Prize winner George C. Marshall spent their summers vacationing right here along the water. This 1910 photograph captures the ‘Old Mont’ at the height of its Edwardian-era glory before tragedy struck in 1956 when fire consumed the original structure.
